Balon Swann
Ser Balon Swann is a knight of the Kingsguard, a member of the white-cloaked brotherhood sworn to protect the Iron Throne. He is described as not as tall or comely as his predecessor, Ser Arys Oakheart, but burlier, with thick arms and a fighter's build. His cloak is clasped with a silver brooch depicting two swans, one ivory and one onyx, seemingly locked in combat. This emblem reflects his own nature: a man of war, wary and watchful, not easily seduced or deceived. Unlike the ill-fated Ser Arys, who was swayed by Princess Arianne Martell, Ser Balon is a man of experience and caution, a knight who would stand behind his shield and make an enemy come to him.
Mission to Dorne
Ser Balon arrives at Sunspear, the seat of House Martell, bearing a letter from Queen Regent Cersei Lannister. His official purpose is to escort Princess Myrcella Baratheon back to King's Landing for a visit with her brother, King Tommen. He also carries the skull of Ser Gregor Clegane, the Mountain, as proof that Dorne's long-sought vengeance for the murder of Princess Elia and her children has been delivered. In the hall of the Old Palace, he presents the skull to Prince Doran Martell, recounting that Clegane "screamed for days" before dying from the poisoned wound inflicted by Prince Oberyn. Ser Balon expresses his distaste for the method of Clegane's death, stating that poison is "a foul and filthy way to kill" and that a knight should die with sword in hand. This reveals his adherence to a martial code of honor, even when the victim was a monstrous brute.
A Guest in a Nest of Snakes
Throughout his stay in Dorne, Ser Balon is treated with formal hospitality but remains ill at ease. He is perceptive enough to sense that something is amiss, noting the absence of both Princess Myrcella and Ser Arys Oakheart upon his arrival. The presence of the Sand Snakes—the vengeful bastard daughters of Prince Oberyn—unnerves him, and he is wary of the Dornish court's intrigues. When Prince Doran suggests traveling to the Water Gardens by ship, Ser Balon balks, citing the dangers of autumn storms and pirates in the Stepstones. This hesitation is noted by Prince Doran, who later reveals to his daughter that the queen's invitation is a ruse: Trystane Martell is meant to be murdered on the road back to King's Landing by men shouting the Imp's name, a plot to absolve the crown of blame. Ser Balon, as the escort, is an unwitting instrument of this scheme, a fact that Prince Doran reads in his discomfort.
The Queen's Pawn
Ser Balon's role is that of a loyal but manipulated servant of the Iron Throne. He is a knight of the Kingsguard, sworn to obey, and he carries out his queen's commands without full knowledge of their treacherous design. Prince Doran, seeing through the plot, decides not to harm Ser Balon, as he has eaten of his bread and salt. Instead, he uses the knight's own sense of honor against him. After hearing Myrcella's false story that Gerold Dayne, the Darkstar, attacked her and killed Ser Arys, Ser Balon is dispatched to hunt down the outlaw. This mission, orchestrated by Prince Doran, removes a potential witness and buys Dorne time. Ser Balon, a man of his word and his vows, is thus sent on a quest that serves the Martells' hidden agenda, a pawn moved by a player he cannot see. His fate is left uncertain as he rides to confront the dangerous Darkstar, a task for which he is well-suited but which may ultimately be a trap or a diversion in the larger game of thrones.
